Room is a novel that truly moved me. It is about a mother who has a son, Jack, both are trapped in a room by the sexual harasser of Jack’s mother. The guy that sexually abuses Jack’s mother, old Nick, is a ruthless guy who treats Jack’s mother as a sex slave. He abducted her when she was going to school one day and has kept her in a little shed-like room in his backyard for years. Finally, one day, she decides that she wants to escape as she believes that old Nick is going to kill Jack and her. So, Jack pretends he is dead and Old Nick takes him out. This is actually for Jack’s escape, which almost failed – but thankfully didn’t. In the end, Jack and his mother are in a rehabilitation center, getting used to the real world.
This story is unfortunately a true one but their escape is truly remarkable. I don’t think I will ever have to courage to do something like that. It was a plan that offered a huge reward, but at a terrible price if failed.
The effort that Jack’s mother had in raising him up was also remarkable. However, I think she could have told Jack the truth – but it would have made her tell the truth to Jack about old Nick and how he was raping her.
Anyway, overall, this story was again, one I couldn’t stop reading until I finished. I recommend this book to everyone as there are many lessons to be learned from it.
